Heather is a beautiful plant with small papery flowers that cover the long woody stems in profusion. Considering the harsh, exposed conditions that it prefers, this is quite astonishing. It grows on uplands across the UK where it provides shelter and food for many species of wildlife. With a rich edible history dating back to neolithic times, it has not only been used to make brooms and baskets but also as an ingredient in ale and tea. White heather in particular, is synonymous with good fortune, with sprigs being worked into bridal bouquets as a charm. The flowers of this pink variety can appear either at the tips or all the way down each sprig.
